The PreserveI actually updated the other day, but I inadvertently deleted my post. So instead of rewriting about Dan Brown again, I’ll write about The Preserve, another good book I picked up at HorrorFind in August.

The Preserve was one of my final purchases at this past HorrorFind, and I bought it on a whim.  And, man, I’m glad I did.

Somewhere in the jungles of Vietnam, an elite force of seven soldiers face a horrific enemy.  Five make it out alive.

Twenty years later, the survivors of that fateful day are called upon by a mysterious man to capture three escaped convicts in northern Canada.  And he’s offering money beyond their wildest dreams.

Having some reservations, the men take the gig with the hopes of a big payday.  Five versus three should be cake, right?

Not when you throw in vampires, werewolves and zombies.  Oh my.

Author Patrick Lestewka does a really, really good job by crafting unique characters in the five remaining members of the elite fighting force.  But, in a way, the book suffers because of it.  He spends a lot of time on the character development, so once they get to the “preserve,” the book seems to rush to an ending.  That’s too bad.

I really did like the book, and I’m glad I bought it.  But it left me wanting more.  It felt like I got to meet some really cool and interesting characters, but once they got to the job at hand, I was hurried to the exit.  I would have liked another 100 – 150 pages of the action in Canada.

The book is definitely worth reading, and I’ll likely read it again.  I’ll probably enjoy it even more because I’ll know what to expect.

  • Actually, I think you might like The Preserve a lot, but I'm betting you'll have the same feelings about the ending.

Bummer about the Brown post. I got the Preserve, too, but I haven't read it yet. I got a Ketchum book about a Vietnam vet, too. Guess I'm in a mood. Or getting back to my roots.

    Hope this works.
